Building & Safety Department

About Building & Safety In The City Of King

Building & Safety’s objective is to ensure that new and remodel construction adheres to state and local laws for building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and housing codes.

The Building & Safety Department achieves this goal by issuing permits, conduct field inspections of construction work for compliance with those codes and provide plan review services for residential, commercial, industrial and tenant improvements to assure proposed structure complies with applicable codes.

Building Permits

Building Permits are required for certain types of construction or remodeling. There are specific issues for residential, multi-family and commercial construction, and we encourage you to take a look at our handouts to get an overview of the issues or read our Work That Is Exempt From Permits Handout.

Building Inspections

For Building Inspections, our goal is to provide timely inspections of construction activities for builders and consumers so the construction meets established standards and so the construction progress is not unnecessarily hampered. Please see Required Inspections handout.

Building Code Enforcement

This program provides building, structural, electrical, mechanical and plumbing inspections for unpermitted projects. Assistance is provided to the Police Department in structure related code enforcement. Functions include issuing stop work notices, corrections notices and citations when needed for illegal or unpermitted work.

Building Codes

On January 1, 2008, the following codes, as mandated by the State of California, went into effect for construction within the City of King.

  • 2007 California Building Code based on the 2006 International Building Code.
