The following groups offer help to South County residents.
- ADULT CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS -- Meets every Monday, 7 p.m., at the Community Recovery Center, 520 Bassett St. in King City. For more information, call (831) 385-0990.
- ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM -- A Monterey County Library service offering one-on-one tutoring to adults over 16 years of age, not presently enrolled in a public school system. The program is free, individualized and confidential to all English speakers in Monterey County, offering both daytime and evening instruction. - AIDS ANTIBODY TESTING -- Free, anonymous testing for any person supecting they have been exposed to the AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus. Testing is available by appointment only at the Monterey County Health Department offices in Salinas, 1270 Natividad Road. Phone (831) 755-4512.

- ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS --Meetings every Monday and Friday at 8 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Bassett and Third streets, King City. Tuesday, 7:30 P.M., Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. Sunday, 6 p.m. (Spanish) at Community Recovery Center, 520 Bassett Street, King City. Also St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Jolon, 8 P.M. Thursday. - ALLIANCE ON AGING -- Bilingual 24-hour senior citizen Information and Referral Service, Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP)-Medicare Counseling, Senior Employment, Friendly Visitor Support, Tax Preparation and Senior Peer Counseling for Salinas Valley residents: Soledad -- first Thursday, YMCA 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Gonzales -- second Thursday, Community Center 11:30 to noon; King City -- on site @ Leo Meyer Senior Center; and Greenfield -- last Thursday, Lions Club 11:30 to noon. - ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE -- A support group for care-givers of persons with Alzheimer's Disease and related disorders meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at Methodist Church, 237 Ninth St. in Greenfield. For further information, contact Irene R. Valverde at (831) 757-0531.
- AMBULANCE -- Dial 911.
- CHAD -- Children with Attention Deficit Disorder of Monterey County. Support and information group for parents of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) children. Monthly meeting second Thursday of each month, 7 Pm, LaJoya School, 55 Roggee Road, room 14, Salinas, 93906. Meetings offer open discussion, support, education, how-to-cope skills and suggestions. - COMMUNITY COUNSELING CENTER -- Offers youth and family counseling based on a sliding fee scale, 24-hour crisis counseling and information referral phone line at (831) 385-6534. Services will not be denied because of inability to pay. Also involved with helping youth who are experiencing problems at home, at school or have runaway. Office hours in King City are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Third and Bassett streets. Dorothy Engel is the on call counselor for this area. - COMMUNITY RECOVERY CENTER --Non-residential community-based support program for people affected by alcohol or other drug-related problems, 520 Bassett St., King City. Call (831) 385-0990.
- CONSUMER AFFAIRS -- This Monterey County department, located at the District Attorney's Office, P.O. Box 1369 or 240 Church St., Salinas, handles complaints or questions from Valley residents regarding landlord and tenant rights, auto repairs, mail orders and credit. (831) 755-5073.
- CRISIS PREGNANCY CENTER OF SALINAS -- Devoted to helping women who find themselves facing a "crisis pregnancy" Free pregnancy testing, free counseling and numerous other services to help a woman through her pregnancy. (831) 757-5500.

(DHHSC) is an "of, by, and for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing" non-profit agency, with a majority of deaf and hard of hearing board members, uniquely allowing us to better understand the needs of our clients. Among the services we provide are: Certified Sign Language Interpreting, telephone assistance, document and form assistance, advocacy, independent living assistance/peer instruction, information and referral, community education and outreach, equipment display/bookstore, equipment loan program, in-service training on use of TTY/TDD equipment, sponsorship of activities for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community, "Family Preservation & Support Program", "Deaf Youth Club" (DYC) for deaf and hard of hearing youth ages 12 to 22 and our services continue to expand.
Eligibility Requirements: Agency serves Deaf, Deafened, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing consumers.
Service Days/Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 12:00noon and 1:00pm - 5:00pm.

- DIABETES: F.Y.I. (FOR YOUR INFORMATION)- Is a free support group for all people affected by or interested in diabetes. It is held the first Monday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Del Rey School, staff lounge, 502 King St. The program is sponsored by the Monterey County American Diabetes Association. - ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALISTS -- The Monterey County Health Department offers investigation of toxic spills, pesticides and food poisonings and other potential environmental hazards. Phone (831) 755-4505.
- FAMILIES OF MENTALLY ILL ADULTS-- A support group for families of mentally ill adults meets the first and third Thursdays of the month from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Monterey Neighborhood Center. - LEGAL SERVICES FOR SENIORS --Provides free legal services to anyone over 60 years of age. Appointments may be made for Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield and King City by calling toll free number, 1-800-499-1247.
- MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES -- The Monterey County Health Department offers a 24-hour crisis line. Phone (831) 755-4511.

- MONTEREY COUNTY AFFIRMATIVE ACTION COMMISSION -- Meets the second Monday of each month from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the supervisors' chambers in Salinas.
- MONTEREY COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT -- Public health nurse, mental health services and environmentalist available at county building on Broadway near entrance to San Lorenzo Regional Park, King City. (831) 385-1291.
- MONTEREY COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT -- Has a representative in King City first and third Monday from 9 a.m. to noon in the building inspector's office, 102 Broadway.
- NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS -- Meets every Monday and Wednesday, 7 p.m., in King City at Community Recovery Center, 520 Bassett St. Open to the public. No fee required.
- PARENTS OF PREMATURES -- A support group for families of premature infants is available to provide information and resources. - PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF MONTEREY COUNTY -- Santa Lucia Square, Greenfield. Low-cost or, if warranted, free reproductive health care and pregnancy testing. Call (831) 674-2200. Appointments are necessary. All services are confidential and bilingual.

- RIDE SHARING -- The average car pooler in Monterey County saves about $500 a year compared to driving alone. You can receive free information about car pool opportunities from "Monterey Ridesharing", a service of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments. - SUICIDE PREVENTION AND CRISIS CENTER --For those with feelings of depression, loneliness or hopelessness. Phone (831) 424-1485 (collect if it's a toll call from your area). Also available: "Survivors of Sudden Death" program for those who have recently lost someone to sudden death or suicide.
