Police Force and Fire Department
Presently 12 active officers patrol within the city limits of King City. To extend the range of enforcement, the police department has four additional reserve officers. Both a Monterey County Sheriff Sub Station and a California Highway Patrol Sub Station are located within the city to provide back up when needed. The force also offers special public safety programs to local schools.
King City's volunteer fire department is equipped with three triple combination pumpers and one standby pumper. United Underwriters has designated King City with an insurance
classification number of five. The Fire Department meets the first three Tuesdays of the month. First meeting is for department business, the next two are for training. We currently have 30 volunteer firefighters. Danny Conatser is the present Fire Chief. Russ Nichols is the 1st Assistant. Geo. Young is the 2nd Assistant. Keck Flores is our Chief Engineer and is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance on our four engines; assisted by four other engineers. Our fire personnel are First Aid CPR certified. The Fire volunteers are also hazmat first responder ops level; some are ICS 400 and 700. This upcoming month the Fire Department will be getting our oxy administration certification. Local Hospitals and Medical Centers
The George L. Mee Memorial Hospital has been serving King City and surrounding areas for 34 years. As one of the city's major employers, this non-profit 42 bed hospital employs 262 people, including 72 active medical staff and 75 nurses. Other employees provide medical office, dietary and ancillary support services.
The hospital provides community based primary care. Services include inpatient and ambulatory surgery, Emergency Room, pediatric care, obstetrics, ICU/CCU, extended care, home health, dialysis, laboratory, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, x-ray, catscan, and the new women's health center.
New facilities continue to be added including the hospital's two outpatient clinics on Canal and Broadway in King City and also in nearby Greenfield. In addition, a new hospital has been built.
The Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, Natividad Medical Center, South Monterey County Medical Center along with several other medical facilities in Salinas also provides a wide range of specialized care.
